Gaim - MSN Crashes

Last night I was having some major PC issues... corrupted USB 2.0 drivers, failing peripherals, and then to top it all off - Gaim started crashing immediately after it started the login process.. I was about to resort to a clean install of Windows and the two days of my life that I would lose while reinstalling and configuring all my apps.

USB Issues...

I was able to solve my USB issues by tossing my existing (and generic) USB 2.0 PCI Controller card and putting in a new Adaptec AUA-5100B card. After installing the Adaptec provided drivers, all was right with the world... except for that damn Gaim issue.

What about Gaim?

UPDATE: Looks like a working patch is available, HOWEVER it is not an Official patch from the winGaim team. Therefor, I would advise that you DO NOT install it as it has not been validated by the team - so it could have been trojanned or any number of other bad things. Please just wait for the OFFICAL fix.

I first tried uninstalling and then reinstalling various versions of Gaim and GTK+... but to no avail. I was able to narrow the issue down to Gaim connecting to the MSN Messenger network, but I NEED my MSN account as it's how I talk with all my subTEXT peeps. As a last ditch effort I thought I'd check the Gaim site to see if a new version was available... worth a shot, right?

A Larger Issue...?

At the time of this post (8/16/2006) the latest version available for general download was 2.0.0beta3... the same version I'd been using for months. But what's this... at the top of the News section I see in bold letters MSN Crashing. According to this news item,

Yesterday, Gaim started crashing for a bunch of people (most notably Windows users) when trying to connect a MSN account. This is due to a bug in Gaim which has been fixed in subversion (don't use subversion), and we're working on releasing a fix. We'll keep you updated. In the meantime, feel free to commiserate with your fellow MSN-using Wingaim users. :)

So there you have it! It wasn't my PC after all, but instead it was/is an issue of much larger scale. Wait, is that actually a good thing? Anyhow, I guess I'm stuck running both Gaim and the MSN Messenger client for the time being... hope that new version of Gaim gets here quick!

A patch has been made available. They say it's not an "official" patch, but it worked for me.

@Jon, Thanks for the feedback!

@Tim, I just saw that the winGaim team has made a special release (2.0.0beta3.1) to fix the issue. Try installing the newest bits and see if that fixes your problems.

still not working for me
tried the patch and the special release...
i noticed it crashes after connected to login.live.com...

Resolved it... it was the wrong .dll
I renamed the old one but left the .dll extension.
I suggest you to delete or rename the extension of the old plugin, otherwise gaim will find the original one very quickly

@Roberto & @Ron: Glad to hear that both of you were able to get Gaim back up and running with the lastest release.

This certainly was a frustrating bug for many of us, and we should be glad that the winGaim team was able to respond in such a quick manner.

Trying to get this working with Gaim 1.5.0 (was having the same problem with 1.0.3). I'm assuming I'm having the same problem. As soon as I try to connect to MSN, gaim dies with the following exception:"Unhandled exception at 0x009d117d in gaim.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000000". Is the patch you folks talking about available for 1.5? Do you have a request id for this patch? Lastly, what dll will I possibly need have to rename?

SOME 1 PLEASE HELP ME ... I GO ON MSN AND THEN IT JUST FREEZES SO I GO TASK MANAGER N CLOSE IT FROM THERE ... SOME ONE PLEASE HELP ME.. OR CAN YOU TELL ME HOW 2 RESET THE WHOLE OF MSN...BLESS

@Lisk, are you talking about MSN Messenger, or MSN Explorer (the web browser)... MSN the ISP?

This post was specific to issues encountered with MSN Messenger, and the issue was resolved with the latest release, which you can get here.

Outside of that, I'm not sure how much help I can be... but I do hope that this post helps you fix your issue.

do you know how can i get msn messenger anti flooder ,anti booter , anti lagger...becoz i face alot of motherfuckers on my contact list and they lag my pc ,my pc becomes slow and this pisses me off ..so i go and restart my goddamn pc..then go return to the msn.,.then another cocksucking booter then sign off then come again?? wtf i need some1 help!!

sorry about i have to swear ..if only you were me u will realize how pissed off i am!

So.. is Gaim working with MSN now or not? I had it up for a millisecond today and then it crashed.. now I can't get it to long into MSN at all. It's been months since I used Gaim, and I missed a bunch of patches, I am sure.. I just downloaded it today and I can't get it to work. Any suggestions?

@shansu: I'm running the latest verion of Gaim (2.0.0beta6) and MSN seems to work just fine. Make sure you're running the latest bits and if that doesn't work - I'd contact the Gaim folks and report your issue.

Where can I download that version? I went to the Gaim page and it shows it but when I click to download it just shows me a list of all the files in the release. Am I in the wrong spot?

I went to the project page and I couldn't find anywhere to download the file. It says "you have chosen to download the file, please read the release notes" but nothing happens.. I don't get a download. Can someone else give it a shot and let me know if it is something on my end please?
