Sorry About the Downtime

If you're a regular visitor to this blog you may have noticed that it (and my life blog) were offline from sometime last Friday (Mar 2nd) through Sunday (Mar 4th).

I realized my site was offline around noon on Friday. After a talk with my ISP's tier 3 support and a hard restart of my router and firewall I thought I had it all fixed and running. (Luckily my support call went much better than Micah's) I say thought because by the time I left for my soccer match that evening I was able to access my sites from my PC.

Thought it was working?

As it turns out I was only able to access my site from within my LAN. The outside world was still getting time-out errors when trying to hit my server... as confirmed by Phil. Thanks buddy!

I went all day Saturday thinking my server was back online, but I was wrong. I ended up spending the better part of my Sunday afternoon and evening tracking down the issue through much trial-and-error.

The fix.

To be honest I'm still not 100% sure what the issue was, but I ended up switching out my router/firewall with a second one that I happened to have laying around. I didn't want to have to resort to that because I'm lazy and I didn't want to reconfigure the box.

But I had to bite the bullet and do it to get my site back online. At any rate the site is back up and running now. And thanks to some new tweaks to my web server, it should be even snappier than before... so enjoy!

What others are saying.

Interestingly, Websense classifies your entire domain under the "Productivity PG Freeware and Software Download" category, which results in it getting blocked at many organizations, such as mind, that block access to downloads.

I'll send them a notice asking them to reclassify.

@hounddog: Thanks for the heads up! Do you know what steps I need to take to get reclassified?
